Ostrich, one of the ten 2-4-0s of the Hawthorn class rebuilt as 2-4-0 saddle tanks in 1877 and used on the South West branch lines stands on the Newton Abbot traverser. The engine appears to be fresh from the works and the details are amazingly clear. The photograph is believed to have been taken circa 1890.
